How can you make pottery handles?

While you may start off with making pots that do not have handles, there will come a time when you will want to graduate to creating cups or containers that can be handled easily. For this you will need to learn how to create handles.

One of the easiest ways in which you can make handles for cups, teapots and the like is to cut off a handle from a slab. The other way is to roll out a coil in the shape of a handle. It is a good idea to ensure that the coil or the slab is of the same thickness as that of the cup in order to maintain consistency. The clay that you use for the handle should also be the same one that you have used for the body of the cup. These handles can be added on to the cup with the use of the slip method. The issue with these handles is that they can easily come off or get broken from the joint unless the joint has been secured perfectly.

If you want to create pulled handles that are smoother and look more like a part of the cup itself then it will require some amount of practice. You will need to add on some extra clay on the portion where you want the handle to appear. You will have to pull the wedge downwards, dry out the pulled handle and trim and cut off the handle to then attach it to the pot.
