How to make containers with slabs

Pottery can also be made without the use of a potter's wheel. You can do this by putting together pieces of slabs. This is something that requires time and patience and should not be done in a hurry. You will need a smooth surface to start creating slabs. It is a good idea to place an old cloth or newspaper in order to make cleaning up better. Spread the clay and pat it down.

Start rolling your clay with a rolling pin. In order to ensure that the rolled clay is of even thickness you can use yard sticks that are placed on either side. Use a rule to cut the clay in straight lines. Measure the clay and cut based on the size of the container that you want to make. To make sure that the angles are exactly at 90 degrees, make a 90 degree angle on a paper and then place it on the clay to make a perfect 90 degrees cut.

Cut 2 sides of the same size that is longer and 2 sides that are shorter if you want a rectangular container. Then roll and cut out the base. Let these lie for some time till they are slightly hard. The harness should be about the harness of leather and should take about an hour for most kinds of clays.

Scratch the edges of the base to ensure that they set in better. A criss-cross pattern on the base should work fine. You will need to use a slip or vinegar to get a yogurt consistency. It is also a good idea to slide the edges so that you can create a stronger bond. Use a damp brush to ensure that the corners are smoother.
