Pottery needles

Pottery needles are great to work with and there are many uses of the same that you will be able to discover as you move along. You can use a pottery needle to measure the exact thickness of the clay that you are working with. You can hold the needle steadily and push the needle across the clay to then measure the side of the thickness. This hole that is created due to the needle can be closed easily by pinching if you are using hands or by compressing the floor of the pot if you are using a wheel.

Another thing that the pottery needle can be used for is to score the clay when you want to join a couple of pieces. The needle helps in creating the dents that are essential in ensuring that the two clay pieces that you want to join are well connected. If you have tried using a pen tip or a pencil tip for doing the same you will realize how it is not too easy to use those tools as against a proper pottery needle.

If you are creating slabs for pottery and need to cut along a straight line, a pottery needle works great. This tool can be used to cut down clay coils and wet clay too. However you may want to know that these needles are great to cut into wet or damp clay and as the clay becomes tougher it becomes more difficult to cut the clay.

Needles are also used to pick up small pieces of clay and you can obviously use the needle to incise any design on the clay.
